Introduction
This paper provides basic I/O performance and scalability information for the AB379B dual-channel 4Gb Fibre
Channel adapters on HP Integrity servers. A series of tests were conducted to evaluate the adapter’s
performance on the rx6600 and sx2000 Integrity Superdome servers. The tests measured the number of I/Os
per second (IOPS) and throughput (MegaBytes/second) of single and multiple adapters. The percentage CPU1
utilized during the tests was also measured.
This paper addresses the performance capabilities of the AB379B when used with the above mentioned HP
servers. The paper also discusses the system setup considerations to obtain the maximum possible performance
from the AB379B on these servers. The AB379B was chosen to highlight the performance characteristics
possible with a 2-port 4Gb/s adapter on HP Integrity servers. If a 1-port 4Gb/s adapter meets your
requirements, choose AB378B.
This paper focuses on the following topics:
Test results: Single and multiple adapter performance data, which include the IOPS and throughput
for single and dual ports, will be discussed.
Scalability: Multiple adapter scalability tests on rx6600 and Integrity Superdome sx2000 platforms.
System configuration guidelines: rx6600 and Integrity Superdome sx2000 system
configurations and recommendations will be discussed.
Test details: HP products used, test setup, benchmark tool used, and system configuration in the test
setup will be discussed.
Executive summary
The AB379B in HP Integrity servers with HP storage offers an excellent SAN solution. AB379B provides read
throughput and write throughput of 410 MB/s on a single port running at 4Gb/s. With dual ports, each
running at 4Gb/s, read throughput and write throughput of 820 MB/s is achieved.

NOTE:

* bd = Bidirectional Operation (reads and writes simultaneously).
**
MB/s = 1,000,000 (10^6) bytes/second.
Theoretical max = theoretical maximum throughput of a 4Gb Fibre Channel link. This is slightly greater
than 400 MB/s because the 4Gb FC specification allows for operation up to 4.25 Gb/s.
The above performance data is obtained by installing the AB379B adapter in a PCI-X 266MHz slot of the
rx6600 (slot 3 or 4).
The AB379B in a 266 Mhz PCI-X slot of the rx6600 offers excellent bi-directional performance. A single port of
AB379B, running at 4Gb/s, provides a bi-directional throughout of 808 MB/s, whereas dual port, each
running at 4Gb/s, provides 1615 MB/s, very close to the theoretical maximum.

1 The term “CPU” in this paper refers to a logical processor available to the HP-UX operating system. This is equivalent to a processor core if Itanium
multi-threading is disabled, which is the case in all the tests discussed in this paper.
