Introduction to PTrace and Trace Files
The PTrace Program and CMI PTrace Mode:
Comparison
You can select or reject records based on their positions in the file, the time they were
recorded, the types of events they describe, and other parameters.
PTrace also provides options for specifying the way in which trace records are
formatted. You can choose a hexadecimal or octal dump of trace record data; you can
enable display of their ASCII or EBCDIC equivalents. You can also choose to display
trace records with or without details.
Each subsystem determines what information is recorded in its trace files. This
information varies as to the types of events that are recorded, the amount of detail that
is included, and other parameters. PTrace provides a common set of commands for
displaying this diverse information.
PTrace can accept command input from a terminal, application process, or disk file. It
can also send output to a terminal, application process, or disk file.
The PTrace Program and CMI PTrace Mode: Comparison
The PTrace program and CMI PTrace mode are similar. However, the PTrace program
is more flexible and easier to use. The following commands are implemented
differently in PTrace than they are in CMI: NEXT, OUT, SELECT, SETTRANSLATE,
and TRANSLATE.
The following PTrace commands have no equivalents in CMI:
DETAIL
Determines how much information is displayed from each trace
record. Some subsystems have this capability in CMI PTrace.
FILTER
Provides subsystem-specific criteria for selecting records.
FIND
Searches formatted output for a specified string and displays
records in which it is found.
TEXT
Enables the text display option, which displays an ASCII or EBCDIC
dump of the contents of the trace record.
TIMESTAMP
Displays the trace record time in the current system Local Civil Time
or in the original trace time.
In PTrace, the function keys F1 through F16 can be used as substitutes for the NEXT
command to display from 1 to 16 records. See Table 3-2 on page 3-20 for the function
key substitutes for the NEXT command.
The Trace File
Trace files are unstructured files. Before formatting a trace file, PTrace verifies that it is
an unstructured file of file type 0 or 830. A trace file contains two types of records: a
trace file header record and zero or more trace data records.
The trace file has a record-numbering scheme that assigns record numbers by the age
of the record. The oldest record in the file (the header record) is record 0. The oldest
