manual abstract

Oracle has been extensively tested for RAC and single instance Oracle 10.2.0.4 and 11.1.0.7, both
in the cluster and over NFS.
Oracle data files should be located on filesystems that are created and mounted in the cluster as
DBoptimized, which provides support for direct IO on a filesystem. This is true no matter how the
Oracle server accesses the datafile, both in the cluster and over NFS. New for 3.7 is that all licenses
allow the NAS administrator to set this mount option via the HP Scalable NAS Management Console.
Previously, only licenses for MxDB-Oracle-HiAv provided this capability.
Running Oracle on servers in the cluster
Oracle RAC requires no additional software to provide high availability when running in the cluster.
Single instances databases can also run in the cluster, but high availability for single instance databases
is provided with the MxDB-Oracle-HiAv product. See the MxDB-Oracle-HiAv release notes for more
information.
MxODM is discontinued
The PolyServe MxODM product is no longer supported. MxODM was a specialized implementation
for PSFS filesystems of the Oracle Disk Manager (ODM) library interface defined by Oracle. MxODM
provided a user mode implementation of async I/O. This interface originally produced datafile I/O
performance improvements when compared to using the standard Linux I/O calls, as earlier versions
of Linux had poor or nonexistent asynchronous I/O implementations. However, Linux 2.6.18 (and
higher) offers kernel mode (not user mode) performant async I/O implementations, eliminating the
performance advantage provided by the MxODM product.
Running Oracle servers over NFS
HP Scalable NAS 3.7 supports the latest Oracle releases, including the new Direct NFS feature. The
HP Engineering team has performed a high degree of Oracle performance and stress testing with
RAC and single instance databases using version 10.2.0.4 and version 11.1.0.7. Oracle server
client testing included 32-bit and 64-bit systems, Linux 2.6.18 clients, and Windows 2003R2 clients
(11.1.0.7 only). Direct NFS, first available with 11g, was extensively tested in conjunction with Oracle
Engineering. To run 72-hour longevity tests, HP Engineering used these bug fixes:
Linux x86-64
11.1.0.7 Interim patch 7682745
Windows 2003 R2
11.1.0.7 patch 4 (11.1.0.7.4P) See Metalink Doc ID: 560295.1
A new document, HP Scalable NAS File Serving Software provisioning guide for Oracle, provides
information about using Direct NFS.
Oracle 11g provides NFS client functionality, Direct NFS, into the Oracle RDBMS server. It provides
improved performance, throughput, load-balancing, and administration for access to datafiles.
However, it does not provides access to CRS files (voting and registry) required for Oracle RAC, nor
to shared $ORACLE_HOME files.
For Oracle servers running Linux, Oracle supports access to CRS and shared $ORACLE_HOME using
the kernel NFS. Datafiles also require access via the kernel NFS for utilities such as dbverify that
do not access datafiles via the database engine. Therefore, all of the filesystems containing datafiles,
crs files, and shared $ORACLE_HOME still need to be mounted via /etc/fstab.
However, with Windows servers, access via NFS is supported differently. Currently CRS files are not
supported over NFS. Options for CRS files on Windows are iSCSI or shared local. Either CIFS or NFS
can be used to access $ORACLE_HOME over the network. Like the case with Linux files, to access
