Controlling
the
Logging
Process
When
lo
gid
has
b een
created
and
the
logle
built,
the
Op erator
will
con
trol
the
logging
pro cess
using
the
: LOG
command.
The
: LOG
command
allo ws
the
op erator
to
start
a
logging
pro cess
to
a
new
logle,
stop
a
logging
pro cess
(for
example,
to
c
hange
attributes
using
: ALTLOG ,
or
to
sh
ut
the
system
do
wn),
or
restart
a
logging
pro cess
to
a
logle
whic
h
has
already
b een
accessed.
Problems
whic
h
may
o ccur
when
using
the
: LOG
command
include:
The
user
of
the
:LOG
command
do es
not
ha
v
e
OP
capabilities
or
the
op erator
has
not
done
an
:ALLOW
of
the
:LOG
command
for
the
user.
START
w
as
sp ecied
instead
of
RESTART
for
a
le
whic
h
already
has
records
in
it.
STOP
w
as
requested
while
user
pro cesses
are
accessing
the
logle.
Logging
to
DISC
When
logging
to
DISC ,
for
User
Logging
to
con
tinue
when
a
full
logle
is
encoun
tered,
the
:CHANGELOG
command
may
b e
used.
The
:CHANGELOG
command
will
op en
a
new
User
Logging
le
with
the
same
attributes
as
the
previous
le.
T
o
use
the
:CHANGELOG
command,
the
User
Logging
lename
sp ecied
in
the
:GETLOG
command
m
ust
end
with
the
three
digits
\001".
Eac
h
time
a
new
logle
is
constructed,
b
y
the
CHANGELOG
command,
the
v
alue
represen
ted
b
y
the
last
three
digits
is
incremen
ted
b
y
1
(for
example,
lename
001 |->
lename
002 ).
If
the
logle
name
sp ecied
with
the
:GETLOG
command
do es
not
end
with
the
three
digits
\001",
a
w
arning
will
b e
given
(to
the
user
issuing
the
command)
that
the
:CHANGELOG
command
will
not
b e
allo
w
ed
for
this
le.
If
the
;AUTO
option
is
sp ecied
with
the
:GETLOG
or
:ALTLOG
command
for
a
disc
le,
where
:CHANGELOG
is
allo w
ed,
the
User
Logging
pro cess
will
automatically
p erform
a
:CHANGELOG
whenev
er
the
disc
le
b ecomes
full.
If
the
;AUTO
option
is
not
sp ecied,
when
the
disc
logle
b ecomes
full
the
User
Logging
pro cess
will
close
the
logle
and
terminate,
prev
en
ting
an
y
applications
whic
h
are
linked
to
it
from
writing
an
y
additional
log
records.
Logging
to
T
APE
When
logging
to
tap
e,
if
an
end-of-tap e
is
encoun
tered,
the
Op erator
will
b e
requested
to
moun
t
the
next
tap
e
in
the
v
olume
set
and
the
logging
will
con
tinue.
The
user
may
issue
a
:CHANGELOG
command
for
logging
to
b e
switched
to
a
new
logle
( DISC
or
TAPE )
b efore
end-of-tap e
is
reac
hed.
The
;AUTO
option
is
ignored
if
the
logle
media
is
TAPE .
Note
Linking
Logfiles
When
a
:CHANGELOG
command
is
issued,
information
ab out
the
new
logle
and
is
written
to
the
old
logle,
and
information
ab out
the
old
logle
is
written
as
the
rst
record
in
the
new
logle.
This
allo ws
the
reco
v
ery
programs
to
nd
the
next
logle
in
the
set.
