Make sure the system indicator panel’s disk light and the drive-in use light are off. If you turn off the power while a disk is being accessed, you may lose data or damage the disk and/or drive. When you power down the computer, you have three options to choose from: Turn Off (or Shut Down) Computer, Standby, and Hibernation. TECHNICAL NOTE: Before using any of these options to power down your computer, save your files and make sure the disk activity lights are off. If you change your mind and decide to continue working after all, wait a few seconds before turning the computer on again. Learning the Basics 97 Powering down the computer Using Turn Off Computer or Shut Down For the Windows XP Home operating system, follow these steps to shut down the computer: 1 Click Start, select Turn off computer. The Turn off computer dialog box appears. Sample Turn off computer Windows dialog box 2 Click Turn Off. The computer shuts down completely. For the Windows XP Professional operating system, follow these steps to shut down the computer: 1 Click the Start button, then Shut down. The Shut Down Windows dialog box appears. 2 Select Shut down from the drop-down list. 3 Click OK. The computer shuts down completely. NOTE Holding the Shift key while the Turn Off computer Windows dialog box is open, changes the Stand By button to hibernate. To use either of these methods, you first need to turn it on in Toshiba’s Power Saver utility. 1 Click Start, Control Panel, then click Performance and Maintenance. 2 Click the Toshiba Power Saver icon. 3 Click on the Setup Action tab. 4 Select the options you want from the drop-down lists. . If you shut down the computer by closing the display panel, you can start it again by opening the display panel. Using Hibernation Hibernation mode shuts the computer down completely, but it first saves the current mode of the computer to the hard disk. Since Hibernation mode does not require power to maintain the saved information, the system settings are retained indefinitely. Restoring information from the hard disk takes longer than restoring it from memory.
