HP P4000 G2 and StoreVirtual VSA memory
requirements for Space Reclamation
In February 2015, HP Storage released LeftHand OS version 12.0. This software offers new storage
functionality for HP StoreVirtual 4000, StoreVirtual VSA and P4000 G2 systems. One of the new features
in LeftHand OS 12.0 is Space Reclamation, a feature which allows the storage cluster to reclaim space
when the host server file system deletes or moves data off of storage volumes. Using Space Reclamation
can increase the memory utilization of the LeftHand OS in StoreVirtual storage systems. While this does not
impact most models, there are some storage systems which require the installation or allocation of additional
memory before Space Reclamation can be enabled. The StoreVirtual Centralized Management Console
(CMC) checks for adequate memory before enabling Space Reclamation. If you were directed to this page
by the CMC when enabling Space Reclamation, your system currently lacks sufficient memory to use Space
Reclamation.
FAQs
What is Space Reclamation?
Space Reclamation is a feature which allows StoreVirtual Storage to recover space that is no longer needed
by the host file system. Space Reclamation uses the T10 SCSI UNMAP command which allows a storage
host to tell a storage array when it has deleted or moved files off of storage volumes. This allows the array
to reclaim this capacity which, in thin provisioned environments, results in a reduction of provisioned space
on the array and an increase in available storage capacity.
How do I know if I need more memory in my StoreVirtual storage system to run Space
Reclamation?
Once a management group has been upgraded to 12.0, you will see the option the CMC to enable Space
Reclamation. When the LeftHand OS enables the feature for the first time, it runs a memory check on all
storage systems in the management group. If any of the storage systems have insufficient memory, the CMC
informs you of the issue. If the CMC does not flag any issues, all the storage systems in the management
group are properly equipped for Space Reclamation. All StoreVirtual 4000 models have adequate memory
to run Space Reclamation. Some of the P4000 G2 models do require memory upgrades to use the feature;
these models are listed in the HP StoreVirtual P4000 G2 Memory Module Installation Instructions, which
may be downloaded from:
https://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/public/kb/docDisplay/?docId=c04567880
Also, the HP StoreVirtual VSA may require more memory allocation from the host if Space Reclamation is
enabled.
