Please check conditions at your monitored location.” GenAlert will repeat the message for a full minute, allowing it to be recorded on an answering machine or voice mail. GenAlert continues to call your programmed phone number until the alarm call out is canceled. Canceling the Alarm After you have received an alarm call, call the monitored location where GenAlert is located and let the phone ring 5 times. (10 times if Switch #2 “Pick Up Ring Count” was set in OFF position). GenAlert will automatically answer and begin playing the alarm message. By calling GenAlert and listening to the alarm message, you have successfully canceled the alarm call out. The alarm will remain active until the fault is repaired, but it will not call out. Resetting GenAlert GenAlert automatically resets to monitoring mode as soon as the alarm condition is corrected AND the alarm call-out has been canceled. NOTICE: Accidental alarm cancelation may occur if anyone calls GenAlert while alarm is active. To avoid accidental alarm cancelation, set the “Pick Up Ring Count” to 10 rings (see Installation) and have an answering machine or voice mail take incoming calls. GenAlert & Voice Mail The GenAlert can answer on either five or ten rings. GenAlert counts incoming rings over multiple calls. To ensure incoming calls go to your voice mail or answering machine first, set the number of rings that the GenAlert answers on to be greater than that of your voice mail or answering machine. For example, if your voice mails answers on 5 rings, set the GenAlert to answer on 10 rings. Calling GenAlert If you wish to call your GenAlert to either check the alarm condition or to cancel the alarm call out, you will need to place two or more calls to your monitored location and let the GenAlert count incoming rings over those multiple calls until the total “Pick Up Ring Count” is reached. For example, if your voice mail/answering machine is set to answer on 5 rings, your GenAlert should be set to answer on 10 rings. Therefore, you will need to place three phone calls to your monitored location in the following manner until GenAlert has counted a total of 10 rings. On the first call, let the phone ring four times and hang up before the answering system answers. GenAlert has now counted four rings. On the second call, let the phone ring four more times and hang up before the answering system answers. GenAlert has now counted eight rings. On the third call, let the phone ring until the GenAlert answers. It should only take two or three more rings because the GenAlert has counted a total of ten rings over the three phone calls. NOTICE: There is a time window of 150 seconds to make the consecutive cancellation calls before GenAlert resets it’s call counter. NOTICE: A “Pick Up Ring Count” of 10 is advisable for telephone numbers that receive a large amount of incoming phone calls. Voice Mail & the Programmed Number If you have an answering machine or voice mail message system at the programmed phone number, the alarm message can be recorded by most systems. This will not cancel the alarm and GenAlert will continue to leave messages until the alarm is canceled. Some answering machines and voice mail systems, however, are not compatible with our alarm message and do not allow the message to be recorded. Please test your system to ensure compatibility. Maintenance Testing Your GenAlert Testing programmed phone number. Press and hold the star (*) key until you see the red LED light up. Release the star key. GenAlert will call the programmed number and play the prerecorded alarm message. Canceling the alarm for this test is not required. Testing GenAlert Alarm. The alarm goes off when the generator fails to run when it is needed. To simulate this failure the generator needs to be running to see the fault, then shuts down, followed by the GenAlert calling the programed number. Simulate a fault by turning the generator circuit breaker to the off position. The generator should shut down and display the fault. The red LED will light up and GenAlert will then call the programmed number and indicate an alarm. Test Failure If the test fails, first try reprogramming the phone number and repeat the test. If a test failure persists, refer to Troubleshooting. Battery Replacement Replace the battery every year. GenAlert does not notify for “low battery” conditions. Remove battery when the unit is not in use. Troubleshooting Problem Cause Correction GenAlert is not calling out during the test or during an alarm condition. Phone number not programmed correctly or never programmed. Carefully reprogram the phone number and try again. Phone line issues: Broken line. Cord disconnected. Service not available. Off the hook or in use. Faulty line splitter. Faulty surge protector. Check phone lines, connections and for dial tone. Wiring issues: Wire leads loose / disconnected. Wires improperly spliced.
