Memory module slot cover Front of computer (Sample Illustration) Locating the memory module slot cover 6 Using a small Phillips screwdriver, loosen the captive screws that secure the memory module slot cover. Front of computer (Sample Illustration) Removing the memory module slot cover 7 Remove the memory module slot cover. 8 Place the screws and the cover in a safe place so that you can retrieve them later. Adding memory (optional) Adding memory (optional) Static electricity can damage the memory module. Before you handle the module, touch a grounded metal surface to discharge any static electricity you may have built up. Avoid touching the connector on the memory module or on the computer. Grease or dust on the connector may cause memory access problems. 9 Carefully remove the new memory module from its antistatic packaging, without touching its connector. 10 Locate an empty memory module slot on the underside of the computer. If no memory slot is available, you must remove a module by performing steps 2-3 of “Removing a memory module” on page 33. For this model, Slot A is the slot on the right-hand side of the memory compartment, when looking from the front of the computer. Slot B is the slot on the left-hand side. If only one memory module is to be installed, it must be installed in Slot A. 11 Pick up the memory module by its sides, avoiding any contact with its connector. Position the module toward the socket, aligning the connector’s notch with the matching key in the socket. latch latch key notch connector (Sample Illustration) Aligning the memory module with the socket Adding memory (optional) Adding memory (optional) 2 Firmly press the memory module into the memory slot’s socket at approximately a 30-degree angle (to the horizontal surface of the computer). (Sample Illustration) Inserting the memory module into the socket 13 Once the module’s connector is fully inserted into the socket, press downward on the top edge of the module to seat the module into the latches at the sides of the socket. These latches should “snap” into place securely with the corresponding cutouts in the side of the module. The memory module should be completely inserted into the socket and level when secured in place.
