Your computer comes with WinDVD preinstalled. For more information on using WinDVD, see the Portege 4000 Series User’s Guide. Chapter 3 Toshiba Utilities Your computer includes several utilities designed to help you reconfigure your system to best meet your individual needs. Together, these allow you to determine certain system details, set additional options or change default options. The Toshiba utilities are: . Fn-esse® . HW Setup . TOSHIBA Power Saver . TOSHIBA Mobile Extension . Hotkey Utility . TOSHIBA Accessibility Fn-esse Toshiba’s Fn-esse program and operating system’s shortcuts provide quick ways to open programs, documents, and folders from within any Windows® program without using the Start menu. 39 40 40 Toshiba Utilities Fn-esse With Fn-esse, you can assign an Fn key combination to: . Open a Windows® program. . Open a file in its associated Windows® program. . Display a customized folder of Windows® programs and/ or files from which to choose. Fn-esse also has several keys that perform preassigned operations, known as hot keys. You can assign any key that is not associated with a hot key or a keyboard overlay. Starting Fn-esse Click Start, All Programs, Toshiba Utilities and Fn-esse. The Fn-esse keyboard appears. Sample Fn-esse window The keys are color-coded as follows: . Available keys are black. . Assigned keys are blue. . Unavailable keys are dark gray. . Keys associated with a pop-up list have a small dot on the upper-left corner of the key. Toshiba Utilities 41 HW Setup HW Setup HW Setup is the Toshiba configuration management tool available through the operating system. Accessing HW Setup 1 Click Start, Control Panel. The Control Panel window appears. 2 Click Printers and Other Hardware. 3 Click the TOSHIBA HWSetup icon. The TOSHIBA HWSetup window appears. Sample TOSHIBA HWSetup window For more information, refer to your Portege 4000 Series User’s Guide. 42 42 Toshiba Utilities TOSHIBA Power Saver TOSHIBA Power Saver TOSHIBA Power Saver enhances your computer’s power management capabilities. Power Save Modes is a series of settings for power management. You can change which mode your computer uses, change settings for each mode, or create your own mode. Accessing TOSHIBA Power Saver 1 Click Start, Control Panel. The Control Panel window appears 2 Click Performance and Maintenance. 3 Click the TOSHIBA Power Saver icon. The Toshiba Power Saver Properties window appears. Sample TOSHIBA Power Saver Properties window Toshiba Utilities 43 TOSHIBA Power Saver By changing the options that appear in the Power Saver Properties dialog box and clicking OK, you can reconfigure that function. You may choose a power-saving management strategy to best suit your computing needs. If you are running on batteries and the programs that you are using do not require a lot of system resources, you may experience longer work sessions by enabling the Normal setting. Any options that you change become the default settings when you exit the program. (You do not have to restart your system before they become default settings.) Power Save Modes tab There are numerous modes from which to choose. You can use different Power Save modes for battery operation and for AC adapter operation. . Full Power mode—Does not perform power saving. This mode is the default for AC adapter operation. . Normal mode—Saves power with a moderate sacrifice of performance. . High Power mode—Saves power with a minimum sacrifice of performance. . DVD Playback mode—Performance has a higher priority than power savings. . Presentation mode—Optimizes settings for presentations. . Long Life mode—Favors battery life over speed and performance. . Super Long Life mode—Saves maximum power. Accessing the Mobile Extension Service Configuration You can access the Mobile Extension Service Configuration in either of the following ways: . Click the TOSHIBA Console button and Slim Select Bay & Docking icon. . Click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, TOSHIBA Mobile Extension.
