To avoid damaging the computer’s screws, use a small Phillips screwdriver that is in good condition. Installing a memory module with the computer’s power on may damage the computer, the module, or both. The computer has two memory slots—Slot A and Slot B. You can install one or two memory modules. Before you install or remove a memory module, turn off the computer using the Start menu. If you install or remove a memory module while the computer is in Sleep or Hibernation mode, data will be lost. Getting Started 49 Adding memory (optional) If the computer is on, begin at step 1; otherwise, skip to step 3. Click Start, and then click the arrow next to the lock button in the lower-right corner of the Start menu. The Shut Down menu appears. The operating system turns off the computer. 3 Unplug and remove any cables connected to the computer, including the AC adaptor. 4 Remove the main battery. For information on removing the main battery, see “Removing the battery from the computer” on page 112. 5 Close the display panel and turn the computer upside down to locate the memory module slot cover. Front of computer (Sample Illustration) Removing the memory module slot cover 7 Remove the memory module slot cover. 8 Place the screw and the cover in a safe place so that you can retrieve them later. Static electricity can damage the memory module. Before you handle the module, touch a grounded metal surface to discharge any static electricity you may have built up. Avoid touching the connector on the memory module or on the computer. Grease or dust on the connector may cause memory access problems. 9 Carefully remove the new memory module from its antistatic packaging, without touching its connector. 10 Locate an empty memory module slot on the underside of the computer. NOTE 51Getting Started Adding memory (optional) If no memory slot is available, you must remove a module by performing steps 2-3 of “Removing a memory module” on page 53. NOTE 11 If your system has the memory modules stacked on top of one another, you must remove the top module first before removing/installing the bottom module. Pick up the memory module by its sides, avoiding any contact with its connector.
