You can recover the C: drive without affecting other partitions by either using the utilities stored on your computer’s internal storage drive or by using recovery DVDs/media, if you have created such media. To recover using the first method, follow the procedure below. To recover using the second method, see “Restoring from recovery DVDs/media” on page 71. To recover using the utilities on your computer’s internal storage drive: 1 Make sure the computer is turned off. 2 Press and hold the 0 (zero) key on your keyboard while powering on the computer. 3 If your system offers a choice of Windows® 7 32-bit or 64-bit operating system, select one at this time. If not, skip to step 4. Getting Started 67 Recovering the Internal Storage Drive A warning screen appears stating that when the recovery is executed all data will be deleted and rewritten. Click Yes to continue. (Sample Image) Warning screen When the Toshiba Recovery Wizard opens and the Selecting a process screen displays, select Recovery of Factory Default Software and then click Next. A confirmation message displays reminding you that all data on the C: drive will be lost during the recovery process. Be sure to save your work to external media before proceeding (see “Backing up your work” on page 106). 8 Click Next to begin the recovery. When the process is complete, a message displays, indicating that the C: drive has been recovered. 9 Press any key on the keyboard to restart the computer. Creating recovery DVDs/media It is strongly recommended that you create recovery DVDs/media. If the recovery files on your internal storage drive become corrupted or are deleted, you can restore your system from your recovery DVDs/media. Also, if your original internal storage drive fails, you can restore your system to a new internal storage drive from your recovery DVDs/media. Getting Started 69 Recovering the Internal Storage Drive NOTE When you create recovery DVDs/media, only the operating system files, applications, and drivers originally shipped with the computer are backed up to the external media and can be restored from this media. Any files that you created are not backed up on the recovery DVDs/media. You will need to separately back up the files you created; for more information, see “Backing up your work” on page 106. When you create recovery DVDs/media, the system will prompt you to insert several blank DVDs or connect one or more USB flash drives of a certain minimum capacity to your computer.
