Directing the display output when you turn on the computer Once you have connected an external display device, you can choose to use the internal display only, the external device only, or both simultaneously. NOTE Some modes are only available with the appropriate device attached and turned on. 78 78 78 Customizing your computer’s settings The quickest way to change the display output settings is to use the display hot key (F4): Press F4 repeatedly until the setting you want takes effect. Briefly pause each time you press the F4 key to allow time for the display to change. This hot key cycles through the settings in the following order (the last two options are available if an external monitor is connected): . Built-in display only . Built-in display and external monitor simultaneously . External monitor only . Built-in display and external monitor (extended desktop) . Swap-Switch primary display between internal display and external monitor when using extended desktop (Sample Image) Display options window Adjusting the quality of the external display To obtain the best picture quality from your television (or other video display device), you may need to adjust the video settings. See the video device documentation for additional configuration steps. Customizing your computer’s settings There are several ways in which you can customize your computer to suit your particular requirements. Refer to your operating system documentation or Help and Support for details. You may also wish to customize your power usage settings. For more information, see “Power Plans” on page 100. There are additional custom settings you can choose. See “Utilities” on page 116. Getting Started Getting Started Caring for your computer Caring for your computer This section gives tips on cleaning and moving your computer. For information about taking care of your computer’s battery, see “Taking care of your battery” on page 104. NOTE Please handle your computer carefully to avoid scratching or damaging the surface. Cleaning the computer Keep liquids, including cleaning fluid, out of the computer’s keyboard, speaker, and other openings. Never spray cleaner directly onto the computer and/or display. Never use harsh or caustic chemical products to clean the computer. To keep your computer clean, gently wipe the display panel and exterior case with a lightly dampened cloth. Moving the computer Before moving your computer, even across the room, make sure all drive activity has ended (the internal storage drive and optical disc drive indicator lights stop glowing) and all external peripheral cables are disconnected. Do not pick up the computer by its display panel or by the back. Doing so could damage the system. Using a computer lock You may want to secure your computer to a heavy object such as your desk.
