Overview
The purpose of this white paper is to discuss the best practices for image capture and deployment for HP thin clients
running Windows Embedded Standard 7. There are several reasons to consider building your own images as well as many
ways to capture and deploy images of thin clients. This paper discusses some of the most important settings to consider
when deploying HP thin clients with Windows Embedded Standard 7.
See the Administrator Guide or Quick Reference Guide for your operating system for more basic information on image
capture and deployment.
Configuring the image to join a domain automatically
An image can be configured to join a domain automatical y during deployment. There are two different methods that can be
used to join the domain:
• Unsecure join—Resets the computer account to an existing shared computer password and joins a domain without
credentials
• Secure join—Requires credentials to join the domain but can actual y be less secure because the credentials reside in
plain text in the file ImageUnattend.xml
Configuring the image for an unsecure join
To configure the image for an unsecure join:
1. Open the fol owing XML file for editing:
C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\Sysprep_Unattend.xml
2. Add the highlighted text to the file:
xmlns:wcm=http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
Note
Check to make sure the Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup component for the "specialize" settings pass
exists, even if it is empty.
Configuring the image for a secure join
To configure the image for a secure join:
1. Open the fol owing XML file for editing:
C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\Sysprep_Unattend.xml
