Wipe out any accumulation of grass in the blade area. Be careful of the sharp edges of the blade. If a grass catcher is used during the fast growing season, the grass may tend to ctag up at the discharge opening. Turn the switch “OFF” and disconnect the power cord plug. Remove the catcher and shake the grass down to the back end of the bag. Also clean out any grass or debris which may be packed around the discharging opening. Replace the grass catcher. 8, If moist grass causes frequent clogging, it will help to clear the clippings from under the deck by increasing the cutting height at the front (only) of the mower. The rear wheel setting will maintain the grass height you want. i. If mower should start to vibrate abnormally, turn mower “OFF” and unplug power cord. Check immediately for cause. Vibration is a warning of trouble. Do not operate mower until a service check has been made. 10. ALWAYS TURN THE SWITCH OFF AND UNPLUG THE MOWER WHEN LEAVING IT UNATTENDED EVEN FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. 11. When you are finished mowing, turn mower “OFF”, and unplug the extension cord at the electrical outlet before coiling it for storage. BLADE SHARPENING Keep blades sharp for best mower performance. Sharpening procedure is as follows: 1. RELEASE SWITCH LEVER TO TURN MOWER OFF AND UNPLUG MOWER! 2. The blade can be sharpened in several different ways. Try to maintain the original cutting angle, and sharpen each cutting edge an equal amount. Bent or damaged blades should be replaced with No. 80-336 Replacement Blade. BY HAND—-Blade need not be removed. Being careful not to cut youself, sharpen both edges of the blade with a sharpening stone or fine tooth file. S&D No. 80-306 BLADE SHARPENER — Wear proper eye protection! To keep blade from turning, place a 2 x 4 (about 2 foot long )through the chute and against the side of the wheel as shown in the figure above. Mount the sharpener in a Va* or W electric drill. Start the drill, hold it with both hands, and move the groove in the sharpener lightly back and forth along the cutting edge. When one end of the blade is sharpened, remove 2 x 4, turn blade 180°, replace 2x4, and again sharpen as in the figure above. OTHER SHARPENING METHODS -—• Wear'proper eye protection! With the blade removed from the mower, it can also be sharpened on a bench grinder, or, when held in a vise, with above Blade Sharpener or a power disc sander. 1. RELEASE SWITCH LEVER TO TURN MOWER OFF AND UNPLUG MOWER I 2. Cut a piece of 2 x 4 wood (about 2 foot long) to keep blade from turning whlie removing blade nut. LOWER INSULATOR WASHER . LOWER BLADE SPACER. BLADE NUT FIGURE 13 3. Wear gloves. Position wood and remove nut as shown in Figure 12. (If square blade spacer starts to turn with nut, use a second wrench to hold spacer and keep shaft from turning). 4. Remove lower blade spacer, lower insulator washer and blade (Figure 13). 5. When replacing sharpened or new blade on shoulder of upper blade insulator, make sure cutting edges of the blades are closest to ground.......Place lower insulator washer over shoulder of the upper blade insulator, sandwiching blade in between. Now place blade spacer and the blade nut on the shaft. Position wood to keep shaft from turning (Figure 14) and then securely tighten blade nut. (If square blade spacer starts to turn with nut, use a second wrench to hold spacer and keep shaft from turning). 5 LUBRICATION CLEANING & STORAGE At the end of each season, lubricate the upper motor bearing as follows: 1. RELEASE SWITCH LEVER TO TURN MOWER OFF AND UNPLUG MOWER! ' 2. Remove the motor cover as follows: (a) Loosen the mounting screw at rear of the motor (Figure 15). (b) Carefully push ¡n on the forward cover locating tab (Figure 16). (c) Tilt cover forward (toward tabs) and remaining tab will come free as cover is lifted off. TURN OFF AND UNPLUG MOWER! Use only mild soap and a damp cloth to clean the mower. Many household cleaners contain chemicals which could seriously damage the plastic. Also, do not use gasoline, turpentine, lacquer or paint thinner, dry cleaning fluids or similar products. Clean out any clippings which may have accumulated on the underside of the deck. After several uses, check ail exposed fasteners for tightness. Your mower should be stored in a dry place, and to save space it can be hung on a wall (Figure 18) as follows: FIGURE 17 FIGURE 10 1. Squeeze the lower handle legs so that they clear the mounting brackets on the mower deck (Figure 19). 2. Lower the handle to a horizontal position, away from tfte deck. Now the mower can be hung upright on the wall (Figure 18). PREVENTING CORRISION — Fertilizers and other garden chemicals contain agents which greatly accelerate the corrosion of metals. If you mow in areas where fertilizers or chemicals have been used, the mower should be cleaned immediately afterwa rd as follows: (1) Be sure the tool is turned off and unplugged. (2) Wipe all exposed parts with a damp cloth. CAUTI...
