These are available at your Black & Decker Dealer. We recommend No. 16 AWG wire size for length up to 100 feet, and No. 14 AWG or larger wire size for longer lengths. Always inspect your extension cord for loose or exposed wires and damaged insulation. DO NOT use a damaged cord with your, mower . ASSEMBLY 1, Open carton and remove cardboard fillers and plastic hardware bag(s) (contents shown in Figure 1). FIGURE 1 ■ Note: 680551-01 Wheels (4) not in bag. E 2. Without removing mower from carton, insert larger, hollow end pegs on plastic straps (Item “C”, Figure 1) into holes in lower handle section at location “E”, Figure 2. (These straps will be used later in step 4 to hold the cord close to handle.) Fasten upper and lower handle sections together (Figure 2) with curved head bolts, hex nuts and lockwashers (Item “B”, Figure 1). Handle must be assembled so that plastic straps “E” (Figure 2) are on the same side as the grass discharge opening. 3. Attach handle to mower deck with 2 shoulder bolts, lockwashers and nuts (Item “A”, Figure 1). Squeeze handle legs together slightly to fit them into mounting brackets. Lockwashers go on outside under nuts. Tighten with two wrenches as shown in Figure 3. FIGURE 4 4. Plastic straps hold cord close to handle (Figure 4). Bend each strap around cord and push peg at outer end of strap into hole in inside end of strap where it is fastened to handle. WHEEL ASSEMBLY 1. Select the cutting height you will want to use on your lawn and note which mounting hole (Fig. 5) will give you this height. 2. Insert an axle bolt through wheel, flat washer, and the hole in the deck providing the desired cutting height. 3. Place another flat washer, lock washer, and square nut on axle bolt and tighten bolt with wrench. 4. Repeat for the other 3 wheels. To operate the switch, insert your finger into the opening (A) in Figure i .and push the lever out. so that you can grab It with your right hand. Pull the lever back to turn the unit on and hold it against the mower handle to keep it running, To turn the mower off, just release the I ever. The spring loaded “SNAP ACTION” lever will quickly activate the stopping mechanism, CAUTION; NEVER ATTEMPT TO OVERRIDE THE OPERATION OF THIS SWITCH. FIGURE 9 SAFETY SHIELD FIGURE 10 This plastic shield (Figure 7) is designed to minimize the throwing of stones or other objects by the mower blade backward under the mower deck. The shield also minimizes the possibility of accidental foot contact with the blade. DO NOT operate mower without this safety shield in place. ATTACHING EXTENSION CORD TO MOWER CORD DO NOT connect the extension cord to power source until you have finished reading this manual and are ready to start mowing. To prevent disconnection of mower cord from extension cord when mowing, (1) make a knot as shown in Figure 8A, or (2) use the accessory Cord Connector shown in Figure 8B (available at small extra cost from your dealer). EXTENSION CORD No. 80-305 1. Inspect area where mower is to be used and remove all stones, sticks, wire, bones, and other debris which might be thrown by the rotating blade. 2. Place most of the extension cord close to the electrical outlet, out of the path of the mower (Figure 9). CAUTION: Do not plug extension cord into receptacle outlet while standing in water or when hands are wet. 3. Begin mowing in the area closest to the outlet and mow in a back and forth manner (Figure 9). When you reach the edge of the lawn, pivot the mower on the rear wheels toward the cord. At the same time, grasp the cord and flip the cord over the mower so that cord again lies on cut portion of of lawn (Figure 10) This action at the end of each cut will keep the extension cord away from the path of the mower. 4. Mow across the face of slopes, never up-and-down. Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on slopes. Do not mow excessively steep slopes. Always maintain good footing. 5. Release switch to turn mower “OFF” when crossing any graveled area (stones can be thrown by the blade). FIGURE 8A FIGURE 8B MOWING PROCEDURE CONT’D i. Set mower at highest cutting height when mowing in' rough ground or in tall weeds. 7, From time to time turn off the mower — UNPLUG CORD —-turn mower on its side. Wipe out any accumulation of grass in the blade area. Be careful of the sharp edges of the blade. If a grass catcher is used during the fast growing season, the grass may tend to clog up at the discharge opening. Turn the switch “OFF” and disconnect the power cord plug.
